Celebrating the Publication of “Bob Dylan: Mixing Up the Medicine”

To mark the release of “Bob Dylan: Mixing Up the Medicine” and the opening of the accompanying exhibition, the Bob Dylan Center will mix up the music for a celebratory concert at Cain’s Ballroom featuring a pair of artists who acknowledge Dylan’s enormous influence while forging their own unique creative paths.

Based in the Big Easy and led by fiercely committed, charismatic singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra, headliner Hurray for the Riff Raff has perfected a unique blend of Americana, folk and indie rock over the course of eight critically acclaimed albums. Segarra’s joyful soundscapes and emotionally intense lyrics are inspired in part by the poetry of Bob Dylan Center Artist-in-Residence Joy Harjo, and the band’s latest release, “Life on Earth,” can be heard as a nature-punk manifesto about survival. On stage, Segarra and their bandmates are known to include surprising Dylan covers among their stellar originals.

Opening the show is frequent Hurray for the Riff Raff tour mate Bedouine, the wanderer-inspired moniker of Syrian-American singer-songwriter Azniv Korkejian. Drawing on ‘60s folk, ‘70s country-funk and a dash of bossa nova cool, Korkejian showcases her lithe guitar picking, mesmerizing voice and reflective lyrical narratives to sumptuous effect.
